An hour South of Sydney, just past Wollongong you'll find Kiama, one of the East Coast's many beachside towns. But the thing that makes this one different? The famous Kiama Blowhole. I never actually knew what a blowhole was until it was described to me and upon visiting one I found out why people found it such a big deal.
Imagine a hole in the rock about the size of a truck where you can hear the waves tearing around below you. Every few minutes a multitude of water blows up out of the hole with the strength of a hundred whales and spatters down on you. As the water falls back down the hole it gives way to a rainbow if you're lucky enough to visit on a sunny day.
Kiama also has a lot of neat shops. Some of my favourite include The Sweet Shoppe which sells all sorts of old-fashioned and new sweets as well as moonlighting as an ice-cream parlor. Of all the cafe's and ice-creameries in Kiama, and there are tons, this one stood out to me the most, mainly because of it's Americana/diner feel.
Now if you're looking for the best clothing shop in town, and want to stay away from the stores that sell middle-aged beach covers ups and white washed clothing, then I recommend Bold & Bohemia on the main shopping strip. As you can probably tell they stock a wide selection of boho style clothing including jewellery, candles and beach accessories. The thing I love about this place is that any of the pieces can be a 'key' piece, nothing there is minimalist or boring.
If you're like me and musty old bookstores are your thing then Terrace Collectibles may be worth a look. As an antique shop they have almost anything and everything that you can imagine as well as old-fashioned cameras and vinyl records that you can try your luck with.
